Morro Bay Traffic Circle: Tribune, Please, Please, PLEASE write an article on HOW TO USE A TRAFFIC CIRCLE
This is an e-mail I just sent out to the editor & staff at the trib:
I'm writing to you about my concerns regarding the new traffic circle in Morro Bay. I'm a Morro Bay resident, and not only have I witnessed some disturbing driving at the new roundabout, I've almost been in two accidents myself!
The other day an elderly woman almost drove up into the circle (onto the pavement in the middle), and today someone turned left instead of right and the car behind him followed. In today's case, a backhoe was being operated at the site and the workers with the flags weren't expecting someone to be driving in the wrong direction, and one of the flaggers almost got hit! Additionally, on two separate occasions I have almost rear ended people who have stopped while driving the roundabout- apparently they were in a stupor as to where to go next... Anyway, it has only been a few weeks that the circle has been operable, and unless you've lived in Europe (as I have), you probably haven't had much practice driving roundabouts, so I understand that some people might be confused about the logistics.
Please, please, PLEASE have someone on staff write an article on "How to Use a Traffic Circle" before someone in Morro Bay has a serious accident! I greatly appreciate your time and effort. I'm sure you can find many leads on your own, but here are a couple that I found:
There's a great diagram at this site, but it's pixelated:

All the info. you'd ever need:

Thanks again.
Sincerely,
Kathie Roach-Wright of Morro Bay

I tried the circle twice last weekend, and it was pretty smooth the 1st time. I was pleasantly surprised people "got it".
The 2nd time, an old man stopped inside the circle (after going halfway around it) to give people coming off HWY-1 North the right-of-way... about 4 cars' worth. I nearly ran into him when he got on the brakes! :O
I encountered some bigger traffic circles in Oregon this summer and was pleased at how efficient they were.
This is a good example of how this is designed for CARS, not PEOPLE. I am visually impaired and will never drive again (it has been about 20 years after over 30 years without an accident driving). I am scared to death of this intersection now because NOBODY EVER STOPS for pedestrians...EVER. Not for the elderly, not for children, not for anyone.
Just because there is funding for a project doesn't mean you had to screw your community with it. I understand that the pipes underneath had to be upgraded (thanks to the "special interests" of the upcoming housing tract on the hillside across from the funeral home, the same one we are now paying higher sewer fees for), but why is our safety thrown to the wind for it?
Oh, I remember...our wonderful Mayor, Fishwife Peters! Thank Cod she & Pierce didn't put it in at 41 by the high school, or we would have dead children, instead of the inevitable upcoming elderly/indigent fatality. Sleep well, Jan. I know I won't.
