Branding an entire city
The Chinese are great at ad campaigns. There is a catchy ditty playing everywhere that says, "Beijing Welcomes You" in Chinese. There are banners along miles and miles of streetlights along the roads to the airport and along major arteries with the Olympic logo and Beijing 2008. There are stickers for kids to wear on their shirts. There are window clings on the trains. Then there are the billboards. Endless billboards with different pictures of athletes and images of China, many of them blocking unsightly projects or those that are not yet complete. There are also giant friendly Olympic mascots or FUWA to be seen on endless posters. It is an incredible sight. The crowning jewel in the campaign are the giant topiaries and flower art in Olympic themes. They rival the Chelsea flower show and seem to be holding up well in the heat. This is the mother of all branding campaigns. It was in itself an Olympic effort.
