This latest Sewage Spill by CMC a division of the State of California is absolutely outrageous! To still allow an antiquated system that dumps raw sewage into the ocean and on our Beaches that our kids and animals play on? that is crazy. A 40,000 dollar fine! give me a break, a fine is not what is needed but a repair job is in order so that THIS KIND OF THING NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN. What is wrong with our elected officials why haven't we heard from any of them over this? I have to admit that I was shocked when I heard that this was even possible. It shouldn't be!

The CMC sewer system is a collection system that provides sewage collection to Camp San Luis Obispo, Cuesta College, the County Schools Office, The Dairy Creek golf course, and of course CMC. They have just recently upograded their sewer plant, and are in the progress of upgrading their collection system. This was part of a Civil Liability Enforcement Action issued on behalf of the CCRWQCB a number of years ago. The system DOES NOT dump raw sewage as a routine function. If a spill occures, then there is the possibility of sewage entering Chorro Creek or one of it's tributaries. When this happens, the county environmental health department is notified, as well as the CCRWQCB. Samples of the affected area are taken to determine the possible level of contamination and necessary mitigation. CMC has very strict reporting responsibilities as well as clean up responsibilities.
There is a project in progress to identify and hold responsible each sewage collection participant, and not just have CMC as the sole responsible party. Once the cause of the spill is determined, the identified party would be held responsible for their actions.
Except for CMC's new collection system, the remaining infrastructure is very old and i probably in need of repairs and/or replacement. As one of the terms and conditions of the participant responsibility, each party is required to scope and identify the conditions of their respective systems.

The spill occurred with the failure of a brand new piece of equipment. Bad LUCK, NOT a bad sewer design. But we will never hear the end of this from our Los Osos "no-sewer-disguised-as-move-the-sewer" crowd. Meanwhile, we are pumping a million gallons a day of garbage into the ground over our aquifers that we drink from, but somehow THAT is not supposed to matter or be noticed. Fortunately the County has the sewer project for Los Osos and something WILL be built to remedy this disgusting lack of environmental concern.
